National Party leader John Key has emphasised that he is taking nothing for granted, ahead of this year's election.
He says he is wary of becoming complacent, following good polling results recently.
"You got to get out there and earn the right to be the government, you got to work hard everyday," says Key.
Key said New Zealanders punish political parties that somehow think they are born to rule and do not take the election process seriously.
He said assuming the polls were a forgone conclusion to the next election would be a mistake.
