Dunedin is the latest centre to impose an inner city liquor ban, effective as of 8:00pm Wednesday night.
Bans are already in place in a number of centres, including Auckland, Whangarei, Kaitaia, New Plymouth, Nelson and Christchurch.
Inspector Don Boyd of the Dunedin Police says the city has long had a problem with those aged 15 to 19 who drink on the main street and assault others or damage shop fronts.
He hopes the ban, which will run from 8:00pm to 7:00am, from Wednesday to Saturday, will put a stop to such behaviour.
