No further charges will be laid over the deaths of babies Chris and Cru Kahui.
The twins' father Chris Kahui was found not guilty of their murder following a six week trial at the High Court in Auckland.
The officer who headed the Kahui inquiry, Detective Inspector John Tims, is disappointed with the not guilty verdict, but respects the jury's decision, describing them as 12 good New Zealanders.
He doesn't believe the short deliberation, of just over an hour, reflects on the Crown's case.
The defence said the police investigation into the case was a disaster and they had a stronger case against the twins' mother, Macsyna King, but chose to ignore it.
Defence lawyer Lorraine Smith told the jury during her summation that police chose to investigate Kahui based on an early opinion from one doctor who said the symptoms one twin showed when he stopped breathing that night was typical of a just-inflicted head injury.
Tims is standing by the decision to charge Chris Kahui, saying it followed a thorough investigation which ruled out any other possible suspect.
When asked what went wrong, he said he just couldn't answer that.
No further charges will be laid against anyone and police have
no intention of reviewing the case as they say no new evidence has
come to light.
