It is not a time of huge growth down on the farm with lower dairy payouts, a strong Kiwi dollar and drought, but when it comes to the South Island fieldays there is still plenty of temptation to spend.
Tractor racers are not a common sight on New Zealand farms but are always a popular attraction.
From humble beginnings 50 years ago, the field days now include close to 300 stalls, welcomes almost 17,000 people and showcases farm machinery worth close to a billion dollars.
But farmers are cutting back spending. Fonterra has reduced payout to dairy farmers and fears about ongoing drought are just two of the reasons.
But any downturn comes after several boom years.
For those with money still to spend there is plenty to pick from.
And at a time of drought interest is also strong in irrigation.
The hands-on displays are always popular. Arnauld Lestienne travels the world showcasing his $130,000 tele-handler.
For farmers, the boom may be fading, but exhibitors remain upbeat. They are in New Zealand in record numbers, betting their products will sell themselves.
