The National Party is promising to come down hard on gangs if it gets into office this year.
Party leader John Key pledged a big campaign against methamphetamines in a speech to a regional conference on Sunday.
He says the way to tackle P is to stop the gangs making and distributing it.
Key is promising wider powers for police so they can eavesdrop
on the gangs and "smash down their fortifications".
National in government will make targeting and undermining criminal
gangs a key priority for the police. We will give police and
courts significant new powers to fight gangs," says Key.
Tougher sentences will also be introduced for being part of a gang, and the Crimes Act will be changed to make it illegal to be a member of a criminal organisation.
The exact implementation of the increased powers is as-yet undetermined, including how they may or may not square with New Zealand's Bill of Rights Act.
