It's not just beneficiaries and those on low incomes who are lining up for food parcels any more.

A Wellington foodbank says some middle-income families are now being forced to turn to food banks as well, as they struggle to make ends meet.

Peter Freedman from the Wainuiomata food bank says people who have previously just managed, are finding they can no longer cover their weekly outgoings because of the rising cost of food, petrol and mortgage payments.

He says they are seeing people on quite good middle incomes who find for the first time there isn't enough money left at the end of the week to buy groceries.

Peter Freedman says people who haven't needed help in the past, but now find they do, shouldn't be afraid to ask for help.
