Commerce Minister Lianne Dalziel is hoping a report into how Australia watches the price of petrol will provide new initiatives for New Zealand.
She has returned from Australia where she met officials to learn how they keep an eye on petrol prices.
Dalziel has now met with the Automobile Association to discuss the Australian method of monitoring fuel.
She says a system already in place in Western Australia will be introduced across Australia in December.
Under the system, petrol companies are required to notify each afternoon what their petrol price is for the following day.
Dalziel says with the price locked in for 24 hours, consumers are able to decide what time and where they will buy their petrol. She says it means the customer gets to know where the best prices are.
She says the government has asked officials to look at the
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission report on petrol
price monitoring and its recommendations to see if there is
anything that can be taken from the report for New Zealand.
