Transpower has put forward a $700-million proposal to upgrade the Cook Strait power cable.

The Cook Strait link carries electricity between Haywards station in the North Island and Benmore station in the South Island.

The upgrade would increase the overall capacity to around 1200 megawatts by 2014, encouraging the building of power plants in the South Island.

Transpower now hopes others will follow its lead by putting money into the South Island's renewable generation.

Chief executive Patrick Strange says upgrading the Cook Strait line will enable a lot more renewable generation to be built in the South Island.

He says it sends a signal that Transpower has the ability to bring electricity to the market in the north, so others are then prepared to commit their money to put the generation where it's most effective.
