The 38-year-old man accused of killing Christchurch teenager Marie Davis not only knew her, but also helped search for her.
Dean Stewart Cameron, a roading worker from the Christchurch suburb of Casebrook is charged with the murder and sexual violation of 15-year-old Davis.
He is also an uncle of one of Marie's friends.
The teen went missing on April 6 and her body was found in the Waimakariri River 11 days later.
Cameron helped the family put up posters of Marie after she went missing.
"He's a coward...two faced and he was just trying to hide by putting those posters up and trying to act sympathetic," says Nick Donald, family spokesman.
Cameron was living in a house about a kilometre from Marie's home and police searched it just days after the teenager first went missing.
He lived with his sister and his niece, one of Marie's friends, in the Casebrook home and it was his sister who dropped Marie home, the night she disappeared.
Donald says the sister and niece are just innocent bystanders.
Her family and friends are struggling to come to terms with their loss, but on Thursday they held a memorial at a quiet spot at the Waimakariri River to remember her.
Cameron is remanded in custody and will next appear in court on May 13.
