The man accused of the murder of Christchurch teen Marie Davis has been granted name suppression.

The 38-year-old faces one charge of murder and one of sexual violation.

His lawyer on Tuesday asked for two weeks interim name suppression so his client could tell his family, however the judge told him 48 hours was enough time to do that.

Members of Davis' family were in court for the appearance and family spokesman Nick Donald says they wanted to see the man charged.

The accused's arrest came after an intense three-week inquiry and 11 days after the 15-year-old's body was found in the Waimakariri River.

She was last seen being dropped off outside her Papanui home in Christchurch early on the night of April 5.

Family and friends farewelled her last week and for them the breakthrough brings some resolution.

"It's mixed emotions...and it's one chapter that has been closed, obviously gives them a little bit of a relief in the fact they have some answer," said Detective Senior Sergeant Virginia Le Bas of the Christchurch police.

But there is still a lot not being said by the police.

They won't say whether the arrested man was known to Marie Davis, whether any more charges are likely or if further arrests could be made.

They are also not saying how or where she died.

They are however very thankful for the public help in the case and are still seeking more information about a car firmly linked to their inquiry.

"We still require sightings of a silver Mitsubishi Gallant in the area of the Waimakariri River and Northcote on the 6 April," Le Bas says.

Police are not confirming whether they have the vehicle under suspicion.

They say they put this arrest down to a lot of information that has already come in from the public and a lot of long hard detective work.
