The celebrations just keep going for the cast and crew of the latest New Zealand feature film to capture critical acclaim, Whale Rider.

The film, based on Witi Ihimaera's novel, has taken out the World Cinema Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Director Nikki Caro says they are thrilled at the film's latest accolade.

Last year the Toronoto Film Festival picked the kiwi-made movie above Bowling For Columbine and Bend It Like Beckham when it won the People's Choice award.

The award at Sundance makes cracking the lucrative US market a lot easier, according to US movie expert Greg Agnew.

"Having success at Sundance gets you the attention in Hollywood that pretty much nothing else can except getting an Oscar or getting a Cannes festival award in France," says Agnew.

"Our distributors have been responsible for a little film called My Big Fat Greek Wedding so they're extremely happy about this and very confident now," says Caro.

Whale Rider opens in Los Angeles and New York in June.
