The Corrections Department says it is not concerned about a barricade of car bodies being erected by a group protesting at the Ngawha prison site in Northland.

The group, which is supported by the veteran activist Titewhai Harawira, has blocked the road to the prison construction site for several weeks with parked vehicles and makeshift barriers. But after being served with trespass notices last Friday, the protestors dragged several car wrecks across the entrance.

Corrections' project director, John Hamilton, says the contractors could easily move the cars, but it is the job of the police to move the people. He says while it is up to the police to decide when to act, the contractors do need to use the access road to bring in gravel.

Northland police have not been available to comment on when they will move against the protestors.
