Ngapuhi people protesting over a prison at Ngawha are spending Christmas under canvas, by State Highway One.

A group objecting to the project has been camped out on the prison access road near Kaikohe for several weeks, blocking contractors' trucks.

One of the leaders, Titewhai Harawira, says she herself has gone home to Auckland for a rest, but many others, including children, will be having a no-frills Christmas at Ngawha.

Meanwhile, the prison objectors are now having to cart water from Kaikohe for their campsite.

The Corrections Department says it was letting the group take water from its house next door, but cut them off after they repeatedly left the tap on and ran the tank dry.
