Yachting New Zealand has made an exception to the rule of nominating purely medal contenders for the Olympic Games.
Seventeen-year-old men's 470 sailors Carl Evans and Peter Burling have been put forward to the New Zealand Olympic Committee, who now have the final say in the selection process.
Olympic selector Rod Davis said the pair have been looked at with a view towards 2012 and prefer them to do their talking on the water.
He said you can't get "two words" out of them, but they fit well into the team structure, adding a youthful touch.
Last month they finished 11th at the world championships, just missing the medal race.
