New Zealand sailor Dan Slater has missed out on New Zealand's first ever Finn Gold Cup world championship - but he has equalled our best ever result.

Slater has finished sixth in Tuesday's medal race, but has held on for second place overall, with Briton Ben Ainslie taking the overall honours, after a second in the medal race.

Dan Slater says it tough to take after such a strong start to the week.

He says he's disappointed because he pushed hard to become world champion, and that opportunity doesn't come around every day.

New Zealand sailor Jonty Farmer also claimed second at the Finn Gold Cup back in 1976.
