Police have confirmed they are investigating a number of serious assaults which occurred at Hutt Valley High School late last year.
Detective Sergeant Brendan Mears says police have been alerted to the bullying by the mother of one of the victims.
She has alleged a serious assault was committed by a group of six boys at lunchtime on December 10.
Mears says the group of year nine students involved had developed a pack mentality which also led to a number of other assaults with weapons.
He says five 13-year-old boys and a 14-year-old have been referred to the Family and Youth courts in relation to the incident.
Police say they will be visiting schools around the region to reinforce the anti-bullying message following the assaults.
