The Ministry of Health is warning people to remain vigilant and take responsibility to keep the spread of HIV and Aids down.

Sunday is World Aids Day - and the numbers of people with the disease continues to increase, with an estimated 40 million people living with HIV.

A Ministry spokeswoman, Alison Roberts, says so far this year, five people in New Zealand have developed Aids, and 22 people have become infected with HIV.

Roberts says the latest figures show 770 people in New Zealand have Aids.

She says newer drugs help people to stay well for many years, but preventing transmission is still the best protection.
