A Northland Maori activist is warning that a taniwha is set to disrupt celebrations next year at Waitangi unless the government engages in real dialogue with Nga Puhi about the siting of Ngawha prison.

Opponents of the Ngawha prison site claim it is wahi tapu, and that a spiritual taniwha resides there.

Recently claims of a taniwha caused hold-ups and a re-think of a new stretch of highway at Meremere in the Waikato.

Titewhai Harawira says if the matter is not resolved it will spill over to next year's Waitangi celebrations.

The Minister of Corrections, Mark Gosche says he has confidence in the various courts that have made decisions allowing the new prison to proceed.
