Te Kaha is setting sail from Western Australia for the Middle East to take part in efforts to track down Al Qaeda and the Taleban.

The New Zealand frigate will be part of a Canadian-led force patrolling the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman, aiming to stop Al Qaeda movements by sea between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and around the Middle East.

An RNZAF Orion aircraft will join the operation next April.

HMNZS Te Kaha was on its way home after a four month deployment in South East Asia when the government approved the mission.

Commander John Martin says the crew are ready for their task.
