The identity of a Christchurch teenager who drowned in the Avon River late on Friday remains a mystery.
Police say they are puzzled none of the youngster's family or friends have come forward.
Eyewitnesses say the teenager was not alone when he fell into the river.
Police have eliminated the city's other missing people as possibilities as none of them match the Maori or Polynesian male who died.
They are appealing for the person accompanying him to come forward
The only clues police say they have are the boy's clothes.
Police say he is probably a 15 or 16-year-old Maori or Polynesian and he is 173 meters tall.
The woman who found him, Lesley Te Kanawa, says: "There was nothing I could do. The other boy just ran away."
Te Kanawa's call to police scurried emergency services into action, scouring the river with spotlights from the ground and above.
The police dive team recovered the teen's body on Saturday.
The youth is not one of the city's reported missing people.
Police will now show pictures of his clothing around the neighbourhood, trying to find out who he is and who he was with on Friday night.
