Retired spin-bowling legend Shane Warne has called for Adam Gilchrist to be dumped as vice-captain of the Australian cricket team and replaced by Michael Clarke.

Clarke, 26, captained his country for the first time in Tuesday night's Twenty20 thrashing of New Zealand, and is widely tipped to succeed Ricky Ponting as captain.

Warne believes Clarke should be made vice captain in all forms of the game to groom him for the captaincy.

"The time is right for Michael Clarke to replace Adam Gilchrist

as vice-captain of the Australian cricket team," Warne wrote in a column in the Daily Telegraph.

"Gilly has done a wonderful job but won't be around for too much longer in all forms of the game.

"What did we learn about young Pup's rehearsal as skipper in the Twenty20 match on Tuesday night? He's good at it and should be the next captain after Ricky Ponting.

"... So to me the next logical step is to groom him.

"I believe the best way to do this would be to elevate him to vice captaincy in all forms of the game."

Warne said he believed Gilchrist would be "100 per cent supportive" of the decision.
