Didymo has been found in another South Island waterway.
The invasive algae has been discovered in South Canterbury's Rangitata Diversion Race, which provides water power generation for stock and irrigation.
Didymo forms dense fibrous mats that can clog waterways and make rivers look polluted.
MAF biosecurity spokesman Chris Brinknell says the find is disappointing. He says it is yet another reminder of the need to decontaminate all water equipment when moving between waterways.
"The Christmas period is especially important as there are many people on holiday using multiple waterways," Bicknell says.
MAF is reminding every water user to Check, Clean and Dry their gear between every waterway.
