All Black management say they are extremely disappointed by Doug Howlett's behaviour.
The winger is likely to face disciplinary action and as ONE News reports officials are not impressed.
"He's done something stupid; he's accepted that. And he's got to deal with that and we move on," says All Black's manager Darren Shand.
"When one individual steps outside those boundaries, it is extremely disappointing, particularly a player of his reputation and experience. I'm gutted really," adds Shand.
Officials in New Zealand have no information on a reported $30,000 bar tab. And with players in transit they say it is hard to get details.
"I don't have any evidence of that story," says Shand.
When half the squad arrived home on Wednesday, management already knew about the Howlett incident. They had been told just before boarding their flight in Tokyo.
It did not stop the coach talking up players as role models.
"They have been great role models for the country, the boys. They're just respected everywhere they go," Graham Henry told media after they arrived at Christchurch.
But not on the message boards of the charitable trust Howlett's involved with. While there was some support, others were clearly not impressed.
It is another embarrassment for a team dealing with its Rugby World Cup failure.
"To this point we've managed that very well and as I say, one person has stepped outside of that and gone and done something that we find extremely disappointing," says Shand.
Management is denying talk of a drinking culture within the side.
"I think there's been a paradigm shift from when I started and you'll always get what I believe are isolated incidents from time to time. And I believe most of them now are isolated rather than on a scale they've been previously," says Shand.
When London police finish their investigation the rugby union will see if Howlett is guilty of misconduct. If he is it is likely he will get counselling or a fine.
If it is serious enough, a player can be suspended or have their contract terminated. But Howlett's already finished playing for the All Blacks and his contract runs out at the end of the year.
