A report released by the Mental Health Foundation says the majority of childhood trauma cases are unrecognised by mental health services, primarily because of a failure to ask.

The report has been released as part of Mental Health Awareness Week, which began on Sunday.

Doctor John Read, a member of the research team which released the report, says the country could save millions of dollars if cases of violence and abuse were identified early.

Dr Read says some of the long term effects of undetected childhood trauma include depression, suicide and eating disorders.
