Police arrested 11 people and gave warnings to more than 400 over the first weekend of a liquor crackdown in Auckland City.

A ban on drinking in the streets in the Central Business District came into effect on Thursday night.

Auckland City Police communications manager Andi Brotherston says most of those arrested were very drunk.

She says officers expect the number of arrests and warnings to drop as the public become more aware of the liquor ban.
