The Mayor of Wanganui, Chas Poynter, says problems with young people getting drunk have been increasing since the drinking age was lowered to 18.
Local authorities in Wanganui, along with the police, Maori wardens and other youth workers, have launched a campaign to push the message that alcohol is illegal for under 18 year olds.
The campaign will see fliers, billboards and posters explain the penalties of commiting or supporting drinking by under-18 year olds
Wanganui police say they will be targeting underground distilleries they believe may be operating in the city, as part of the community's wider crackdown on under-age drinking.
A community constable, John Dale says teenagers are getting alcohol from many sources, including older family members, and liquor off-licenses. But he says a worrying possibility is mobile distilleries.
