A blow to next year's ASB Tennis Classic in Auckland with defending champion Jelena Jankovic confirming she won't be back.
Tournament director Richard Palmer is currently at the US Open in New York and says Jankovic's application to the WTA Tour for an exemption to play in Auckland has been rejected.
Her top 10 ranking excludes her from tier four tournaments like the Classic.
Palmer says he did all he could and the Tour considered the application but decided they needed to be consistent.
He says he has spoken to a number of players at the US Open, including ninth seed Daniela Hantuchova, who has revealed she would be happy to return but has a couple of other offers to consider.
