Stabbing victim farewelled

Published: 7:37PM Thursday September 05, 2002

Wiremu Waho, the teenage musician stabbed to death at a party in a gang-troubled suburb, has been buried.

Around 1,000 mourners filled the Kawiu Marae in Levin to farewell the 17-year-old.

Witnesses say Waho was trying to break up a fight when he was stabbed on Saturday night in Highbury in Palmerston North.

His body was carried to his family's burial ground.

"You might be gone my brother but you're still here, still in our hearts where it means the most... you'll never be forgotten," said Waho's brother Jason Waho, speaking at the tangi.

Steven Hoani Bunyan, 24, of New Plymouth, has been charged with Waho's murder.
