Tonnes of terrorist-scarred steel have been unveiled in Christchurch, the remains of seven steel girders taken from New York's World Trade Center which was devastated by the September 11 terror attacks.

The girders are going to be made into a commemorative sculpture on the banks of the Avon River by sculptor Graham Bennett.

"It's incredible to think that this time last year they were 102 stories up on the New York skyline," Bennett says.

The steel beams have already been spiritually cleansed and will soon be physically cleaned prior to recrafting into a unique memorial.

Bennett says he wants to makes as few changes to the material as possible.

"I don't want to pretty it up in any way, it's still got to maintain the feeling it's got right now."

The sculpture will be unveiled as firefighters gather in Christchurch for their biennial world games in October.
