The Foreign Minister has confirmed that his office helped speed the process for a New Zealand woman to get home after apparently being held captive in Ecuador for more than a decade.

Moapi Tukufenoga has told the story of being abducted after going to a party on a boat in Auckland when she was 18.

The Foreign Minister Phil Goff says he was asked to help when contacted a couple of months ago.

Goff says 700,000 people a year are trafficked, and they are usually young women on the way to a life of sex slavery.
