A government review of Treaty of Waitangi settlement procedures appears unlikely.

The Waitangi Tribunal is recommending the Te Arawa settlement be delayed after it criticised the Crown for picking favourites and making decisions on tribal groups based on inadequate information.

The Maori Party is calling for the Crown to review its settlement procedures in the wake of the report.

Treaty Negotiations Minister Mark Burton doesn't agree with one of the Tribunal's main findings that Crown negotiations have been inconsistent with Treaty principles.  He say he has difficulty with the notion the Crown has acted other than consistently and in good faith.

Burton says while he is open to improving processes he wouldn't want to stop the process of engagement with Maori. He says he can't meet with negotiators and tell them their claim would be parked for up to two years because procedures have to be reviewed.
