A 28-year-old man was taken into custody after West Auckland police used a taser to subdue him.
The man faces charges including kidnapping and assault.
Police say the man took his partner hostage at knifepoint from a New Lynn address just after 8pm and they say the man threatened to kill her if police showed up. He then left the address, taking the woman with him.
Inspector Gary Hill says the man was confronted at a roadblock. Hill says police used the taser to quickly take him into custody.
He will appear in the Waitakere District Court on Monday.
