A fifth person has been arrested over the brutal abuse of a three-year-old Rotorua girl

The 47-year-old man will be appearing in the Rotorua District Court on Friday afternoon charged with assault on a child and injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police say he is a member of the girl's family and they will be opposing any application for bail.

Three other people - three teenagers and a 21-year-old, have already been charged.

The girl remains in a drug induced coma in Starship Hospital, however, her injuries are no longer described as life-threatening.

The toddler was originally taken to Rotorua Hospital on Sunday morning suffering from a head injury before being airlifted to Auckland.

Police say the little girl had been repeatedly assaulted for up to three weeks before being admitted.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Loper says it appears the assaults intensified over three days at the end of last week, but medical treatment was not sought until at least 36 hours after the last attack.
