Former Labour Prime Minister David Lange is unwell and having tests.

But his spokesperson, Lorna Best, says reports that Lange has leukaemia are "rubbish".

Best says Lange has a protein disorder called amyloidosis, for which he is undergoing chemotherapy as an outpatient in Auckland.

She says he is also having tests to monitor his condition while treatment is under way.

Amyloidosis is a rare disease involving the deposit of abnormal protein - which comes from bone marrow cells - in body tissues or organs.
