A man is seriously injured in Dunedin hospital tonight after falling 20 metres while climbing up an icefall in the Remarkable Ranges, near Queenstown.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around midday and he was attended to at the scene before being flown by rescue helicopter to Dunedin.

Doctors say he sustained a critical head injury in what is being described as a freak accident.

He was with a party of four on a private climb up the frozen waterfall when the structure collapsed with him on it.

Police say he was an experienced climber just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
