Spain said it was holding two people on suspicion of trying to fraudulently claim a $5.2 million reward offered for the return of British four-year-old Madeleine McCann who vanished in Portugal last month.

The two, an Italian man and a Portuguese woman, were arrested in Sotogrande on Spain's southern coast, said a police statement.

"Police started to investigate them after learning they tried to contact Madeleine's parents to claim the reward on offer," said the statement.

Madeleine disappeared from her bed while her parents dined at a nearby restaurant in the Praia da Luz resort in Portugal's Algarve region on May 3.

British business tycoons and celebrities ranging from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling to soccer players have contributed to the reward for her return.

Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have campaigned relentlessly to draw attention to her disappearance, including meeting the Pope.
