Alcohol Healthwatch says the legal age to buy alcohol should be raised from 18 to 20, after a survey showed that only 40% of 18-year-olds are asked for identification when buying alcohol.

Over 200 off-licence premises in the Auckland region were visited by what were described as average-looking teenagers to buy alcohol without age identification.

Alcohol Healthwatch's spokesman Roger Eccles says the results were disappointing, with 61% of places not asking for ID when selling alcohol.

Eccles says the worst offenders were grocery shops where only 20% of the teenagers were asked for ID.
