A Christchurch-based company has released a new tool to combat possums as an alternative to the controversial pesticide 1080.

Kiwicare Corporation, in collaboration with Landcare Research has registered its product No Possums cholecalciferol gel bait.

The product is designed specifically for New Zealand's environmental conditions and is highly palatable and attractive to possums with a low risk of secondary poisoning.

Kiwicare chief chemist Martin Carson says trials confirmed No Possums is less of a risk to non-target species than 1080.

A hearing on reassessing 1080 has started around the country and will be held in Christchurch on Wednesday. Security will be tight as there are fears protesters may disrupt the meeting.
