The former head of the Australian army General Peter Cosgrove says it would be "bizarre" and unprofessional for a film crew to follow Prince Harry in Iraq.

It has been reported a crew will accompany the 22-year-old soldier prince, who is third in line to the throne, during his deployment with UK forces in southern Iraq.

General Cosgrove described such a move as "bizarre", saying the last thing soldiers serving on the front line would want was a film crew running around after them.

"It's a bit like dragging a group of innocent civilians with you, albeit burdened with cameras," General Cosgrove told the Nine Network on Monday.

"I don't think it's a very sensible or professional thing to be doing unless the job he is doing is actually not a frontline combat sort of a job.

"It's professionally unwise to do that and I really hope that he and his soldiers will be safe and the camera crew will be safe in what is a dangerous place."
