Rewards worth the equivalent of almost seven million dollars are being offered for the safe return of a British girl kidnapped from a family holiday in Portugal.

It is now nine days since the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, and there is still no sign of her.

Family spokesman Alex Woolfalls says her parents are grateful to local people who organised a church service for her fourth birthday.

Evidence laws prevent Portuguese police saying much about their inquiry whilst it is ongoing.

It is believed their main focus is a couple seen with a young blonde girl around the time Madeleine McCann disappeared.

A suspicious man was also reported near her family's apartment around the time she went missing.

Local MP Mendes Bota says the kidnapping has shocked the peaceful tourist town.

Police have also extended their checks to cars crossing the Portuguese border with Spain.
