The head of the British Army has confirmed that Prince Harry will go with his unit to Iraq, despite fears about the prince and those around him becoming a target.
There had been growing speculation the young royal would not be allowed to go, after the deaths of more than a dozen British soldiers in Iraq in the last few weeks.
But now Army chief General Sir Richard Dannatt has granted the prince's wish to serve.
He said the decision had been taken after the "widest possible
consultation". Though he has also said he could change his mind if
circumstances change.
Prince Harry had been due to command a reconaissance platoon of
armoured vehicles in southern Iraq. His regiment is due to be
deployed any day.
Harry, 22, is responsible for 11 soldiers and four Scimitar
reconnaissance vehicles.
He would become the first British royal to see active service since
his uncle Prince Andrew flew helicopters in the 1982 Falklands War
with Argentina.
