Voters not to be bought with wine

Election candidates are being warned that it is okay to give cups of tea to potential voters, but a glass of sauvignon blanc could lose them their jobs.

The Chief Electoral Officer says candidates should be cautious because of the risk of being accused of influencing their vote by 'treating', as it's known in law.

David Henry says the Electoral Act states that a light supper after a campaign meeting should be about as far as it goes.

He says a candidate proved to be bribing voters could lose their seat, go to jail or be fined up to $4,000.
