The National Party says it is committed to restoring an air combat force and buying a third frigate.

National's leader Bill English says a National government would increase defence spending beyond what he describes as the present inadequate level of barely one percent of GDP.

"Labour cut the air combat wing without any public consultation. New Zealanders are telling me everywhere I go that they strongly oppose this," English said.

English says the public will be consulted on major defence purchases as part of a defence review National would undertake on coming to power.

He says a National government would negotiate a new Anzac defence agreement with Australia.

English says National would also build on the relationship with the United States, but New Zealand's nuclear free legislation would remain in place.

English has also announced that Richard Worth will be the party's new defence spokesperson, and Katherine Rich will take on the role of tourism spokesperson.
