The growth of childhood obesity is being reflected in the size of school uniforms with statistics showing students need them several sizes bigger than they did just a few years ago.

When you walk into a school uniform shop today.. you could be forgiven for thinking it was the big and tall store.

David Kranz from the School Uniform Centre says shirts are coming in sizes four or five x. Standard sizes on the shelf for boys' shorts is 120 cm and girls' blouses go right up to size 24.

Recent surveys put the number of overweight or obese teens at around a third of the population and the most popular uniform measurements have risen three to four sizes in the past 10 years.

And it's not just the girth - students are also getting taller and shoe sizes bigger - even to a massive size 18.
