Hemp off the menu

The fledgling industrial hemp industry is considering its future after an Australia New Zealand Food Standards Council decision to ban the use of hemp seed or oil in both countries.

The council decided to prohibit the use of hemp as a novel food, concerned it might send a confused message to consumers about cannabis, which has high levels of the addictive substance THC.

The Hemp Industries Association says the THC levels in hemp are too low to be addictive.
