Police are defending their use of a Taser stun-gun to control an offender in West Auckland.

The man was shocked in the leg in Henderson this week, after he resisted arrest and struggled violently with an officer.

Some eyewitnesses have claimed the man police subdued was a peacemaker, who had been trying to break up a fight.

Inspector Scott Webb says a senior sergeant spotted a fight between up to eight people, some of whom had knives and metal bars.

He says police back-up arrived while the officer was being attacked by one of the men involved in the fight.

Webb says the offender was warned three times before being tasered.
