Guide Dog puppies are irresistibly gorgeous, so much so you wonder how anyone could give them up.

But families taking them on are preparing them for being guide dogs and do so knowing that giving them back after a year is part of the deal.

It costs more than $22,000 to breed and train a puppy and it is done with no government funding.

So the Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind rely on what they can raise during the Red Puppy appeal and the generosity and patience of those willing to adopt them, then say goodbye.

Red Puppy appeal is from 26 to 28 March.
