For countless thousands of New Zealanders, it was simply "the" place to go - a giant former circus tent pitched out the back of Mt Smart stadium.

But now the Mt Smart Supertop is no more.

It was sold for a pittance and is now awaiting a buyer to bring it back to life, otherwise it will be torn up and recycled.

Michael Holland watched the death throes of an entertainment icon.
