The chances are you won't have heard of him yet but 22-year-old dancer and R and B singer J Williams is rising from his humble beginnings in Manurewa to singing stardom.

He follows in the footsteps of two sisters who have already carved successful music careers overseas.

Now a recording label has snapped up J, and this week his first album was launched in music stores around the country.

And, as Sonia Voigt found, he already has a surprising number of dedicated fans.
