The witch-hunt has started.
The government wants to track down whoever leaked cabinet proposals to look at mining in conservation areas, but finding the leaker will do little to temper public concern about the proposal.
The mining industry says there are billions of dollars in resources buried in New Zealand parks and they should at least find out what's there.
But conservationists call it the thin end of the wedge.
Mark Sainsbury discusses the issue with Kevin Hackwell from Forest & Bird and Doug Gordon from the New Zealand Minerals Industry Association.
Viewers were evenly divided over the Close Up mining poll which
asked: "Are you open to mining in our national parks?"
Results: Yes - 6,317; No - 6,276.
